Sushi Roku Manhattan Beach

It’s our second post of January 2023 and we are talking about food again! This is particularly not good since both Harriet and I are trying to lose those extra pounds from the holidays. But we wanted to let you know about a new favorite restaurant in Manhattan Beach: Sushi Roku. Our next post will be fashion. Honest!!

Sushi Roku has been around since 1997; it now boasts six restaurants, the newest in Manhattan Beach, California. Opened last October in Manhattan Village, it is a beautiful space, minimalist and cool, offering traditional sushi with a twist. The website describe the food as such: “Sushi Roku combines the finest, freshest fish from pristine waters around the globe with the kind of artistry that can only be provided by a mature sushi chef ensuring superlative traditional sushi, together with a splash of California innovation. Sushi Roku is a pioneer of contemporary sushi, incorporating diverse, non-traditional ingredients from Latin America (e.g. jalapeños) and Europe (e.g. olive oil) into its edible works of art.”

I certainly couldn’t have said it better myself! Even if you are not a traditional sushi/sashimi lover, you will truly appreciate the food at Sushi Roku. To illustrate some of the interesting items, I have included a portion of the menu for you to peruse.

Yes…there is certainly the traditional dishes you would expect in a sushi restaurant. However, there are unexpected choices as well: Brussel Sprout Chips, Bacon Wrapped Jumbo Shrimp, American Wagyu Potstickers and many more.

Harriet really enjoys traditional sushi; I tend to be more into less serious fare. Sushi Roku is perfect for both. Plus don’t forget to check out the specialty cocktails. Amazing!

Begin with a Cocktail

Harriet’s Favorite: A very pale pink Cosmo

Rick’s Choice: Heat of the Dragon (Silver Petron, Cointreau, kumquat, lime, serrano)

Harriet and Rick decided to give Sushi Roku a try a few weeks ago. Needless to say, they were very impressed with the ambiance as well as the food. But of course they began with some very special cocktails!

And for Starters….

Shishito Japanese Peppers
Brussels Sprout Chips with truffle oil…DELISH

As I mentioned previously, Sushi Roku has both traditional and more experimental food. A case in point is the apps that Harriet and Rick selected. Shashito Japanese Peppers are fairly common on a sushi menu while Brussel Sprout Chips are less expected.

Traditional Sushi

The favorites: Tuna and Albacore

Harriet usually goes for much more traditional sushi dishes. She likes it simple and clean. So these selections were perfect for her taste.

The Finale: Dessert

All chocolate all the time. Birthday dessert

Is Sushi Roku worth a visit? Absolutely. The food and drink are memorable. The service is impeccable or at least it was the night they were there. The restaurant is a bit of a scene so it’s high level energy and noisy. But if you are in the mood for it, Sushi Roku in Manhattan Beach is a must.
