Dinner at Bouchon Bistro

Probably the most renowned restaurant in Napa Valley is The French Laundry. Yes, it is a spectacular restaurant but it is very formal, expensive and almost impossible to get a reservation. If you want to dine at a Thomas Keller restaurant that is a bit more casual, but still has amazing food, I would suggest Bouchon Bistro in Yountville.

Bouchon Bistro in Yountville

Thomas Keller opened Bouchon Bistro in 1998. If you google the word bouchon, it is a style of restaurant that is in Lyon, France which serves traditional Lyonnaise food. Having not been to Lyon, I can’t confirm that information; however, I can confirm that Bouchon boasts the ambiance of a French bistro: marble and brass accents, rich red leather booths and an iconic tiled floor. The vibe is lively, the service friendly and the food is delicious. Boosting a Michelin star, it is a must visit when you are in Napa Valley.

The bar at Bouchon offers a fantastic selection of cocktails. If you have been wine tasting all day, perhaps start with an old fashion or a great martini!

Of course the Bouchon wine list is spectacular. If you desire a local California vintage or a varietal from France, you won’t be disappointed.

Where to begin….Although the menu changes seasonally, there are dishes that always remain on the menu. Soupe a’ L’Oignon is a staple; my daughter described it as “the best ever.!” I tried a seasonal salad of burata and peaches which was flavorful and delicious. My son-in-law had never tried escargot, so Bouchon was the perfect place to give this dish a try. If you are in the mood for seafood, the Fruits de Mer has many options.

Of course the traditional French dishes are always available: Moules au Safran, Truite Amandine and of course, Steak Frites! Both my daughter and son-in-law opted for the steak. I love trying new dishes from the seasonal menu: the ahi was perfectly seared and a terrific choice.

Bouchon is also famous for their pastries. In addition to Bouchon Bistro, there is also Bouchon Bakery located next door. Of course we had to indulge. Profiteroles are a staple and never fail to impress. And the macaroons are not to be missed.
